Making Your First Safari a Memorable One

In search of the Ultimate Luxury Safari . . . This is such a personal quest. My clients have varying objectives and expectations when heading out to the African Bush. In large part, this is the thrill of planning a first-time safari. No two experiences should ever be exactly the same. Listed below are 5 planning considerations to make your first safari a memorable one.

accomodations

Through my personal travels to Africa, I have stayed at each type of accommodation — lodges and villas, luxury tented camps, and mobile camps. Do you prefer the exclusive use of a villa with your family or staying at a lodge where you can socialize with like-minded travelers? I personally enjoy a blend of both. However, my own preferences do not influence my recommendations for you. My ultimate goal is to determine your interests and purposes when going on safari and then carefully tailoring the trip and selecting lodges based on those specific desires.

safari options

Is the primary focus of the trip seeing the Big Five, birding, the hope of spotting a wild dog, witnessing a kill or the Great Migration, climbing Kilimanjaro or gorilla trekking? What other elements are you seeking? Having the most experienced, knowledgeable guides and perhaps one with photography expertise? Interaction with the local people or possibly joining in a conservation effort that may bring more purpose?

Food & wine

At the end of a day of game viewing, is it the outstanding food, wine selection and impeccable service that is also most important? Many clients covet options for fine dining during their trip. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the company of others while tasting the flavor of the local area.

travel amenities

There are also other considerations to factor in when planning your first safari. Do you want a gym or a spa? Internet service is now readily available at most lodges, but there are still some purposefully without, so is connectivity a must?

exclusive experiences

What are the extraordinary or exclusive experiences you may also look for? Is it a helicopter ride over the Okavango Delta or Victoria Falls, a horseback safari, a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti, spending a night star gazing in a treehouse or a private bush dinner?

Whatever your expectations are for your first safari, my goal as a luxury safari planner is to exceed them. If you fall in love with Africa as I have, you will undoubtedly want to return again and again. For so many of us, travel to Africa is more than just a once in a lifetime adventure. It becomes a passion. — Lou deLisser, owner
